About the Film
KANO - the title of which alludes to the abbreviated form of the name of the "KAGI NORIN" vocational school team - is a 2014 Taiwanese baseball film directed by Umin Boya and produced by WEI Te-Sheng and Jimmy Huang. Based on the real-life story, it depicts how the multiracial KANO baseball team from southern Taiwan overcame great odds to represent the island in the 1931 Japanese High School Baseball Championship at "KOSHIEN" Stadium, when Taiwan was still under Japanese rule. Performing beyond all expectations, the underdog team advanced to the championship game in the tournament.

The Kagi Agriculture and Forestry Public School (a.k.a KANO, short for its Japanese name KAGI-NORIN School) was established to help develop the local agriculture in Southern Taiwan. The KANO baseball team started out simply as a sports club aimed to improve the students’ physique. It never occurred to the team that the arrival of Coach KONDO would completely transform them and help them leave a legacy that eventually became a legend.
To every young baseball player in early-twentieth century Taiwan, "KOSHIEN" (Japan's high school baseball championship) was the dream palace. For KANO's players who came from Japanese, Taiwanese and indigenous families, it was a goal far beyond their reach. However, they endeavored to make it possible. Coach Kondo imposed on them hell-like training as well as developed these young players’ potential by taking into account their strength and skills base on their ethnic identities.
Much to everyone’s surprise, this previously unknown team finally won the local championship in Taiwan and proudly marched into KOSHIEN. Facing the strongest opposing team, the KANO boys were struggling in the final game. Burning with their passion for baseball, these farm boys from southern Taiwan finally not only won the pride but also marked the legendary page in Taiwanese baseball history.
